Overall: 7.9/10

Story 8.1/10

Andy is the only family that Rain has left. But she’s miserable where they are. And she refuses to suffer the same fate as her parents. Her boyfriend is bad news, but he has a plan to get them off the rock they’re currently on. It’ll just take a huge sacrifice on Rain’s part.

This movie has a lot of easter eggs from other parts of the Alien, Predator, Prometheus and Blade Runner universe. The writers deftly place them in the story as they are used to ask two critical questions. What is life? What is family? The characters struggle with these questions as they fight for their lives.

Character 7.7/10

Rain (Cailee Spaeny) is so sick of just existing. She knows there is more to life than that. But the more she struggles to break away from the existence that cost her her parents, the more her circumstances refuse to let her go. Meanwhile, she hangs onto her brother, the last vestige of her family.

Andy (David Jonsson) only lives to do what’s best for Rain, even if it means sacrificing himself. But along the way, he grows beyond his initial desire and gains a new purpose. At the same time, he discovers a lot of new capabilities. Then he has to answer his own questions.

Tyler (Archi Renaux) has no depth. If this were another genre of film, he would be the dumb jock. He isn’t capable of introspection or is too lazy to aspire to it. In Tyler's mind, Andy can't be family.

Bjorn’s (Spike Fearn) pain makes him bitter. He takes the frustration of his loss out on Andy just because Andy can’t fight back.

Final Thoughts

Fans of the Alien movie franchise need Alien Romulus in their lives. The movies had grown stale. But Romulus injects a much-needed infusion from other franchises in the universe, as it wrestles with the meaning of life and its relationship to family.
