Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Review: A Worthy Return for Netflix's Hit Series

Aang and the gang are headed to the land of the Earthbenders. He’s in need of a teacher to instruct him in the art of the earth element.

But once he meets up with his old friend, he gets a lesson that he hasn’t anticipated—one that he has yet to understand at that point in the story.   

Back on the path of finding a teacher, Team Avatar comes across a place that looks like paradise. But Aang starts to realize what his friend wants him to learn.

Once he stops and listens, Aang understands things may be different than they appear on the surface.

Character 7.7/10

Gordon Cormier/Aang

The pressure gets to Aang. He starts to lash out at those who’ve been with him from the start. He’s beguiled by what he sees initially. It leads to confusion. He has to do some soul searching to understand who his friends really are.

Kiawentiio/ Katara 

What Katara sees in Ba Sing Se frustrates her. There is luxury, wealth and excess. But for all the grandeur, there are those in the earth kingdom that go without bare necessities, like safety and medicine. So Katara decides to do something about it.

Ian Ousley/ Sokka

The loss of his first love traumatizes Sokka. It affects his relationship with Suki. He worries over her much more than he should. It's understandable. He doesn't want to see history repeat itself. But it starts to affect the way he does his job.

Miyako / Toph Beifong

Toph sees the world differently than most people. As a result, she sees more of it than they do. The irony is that she wants her friends and family to see her and accept who she is. Sadly, it’s her parents who have the most difficulty with that request.

Maria Zhang / Suki

Suki is the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors. She’s a fierce fighter, who wants to help the Aang save the world. She also happens to be in love with Sokka.

But she can’t figure out why he keeps pulling away. It doesn’t matter though. She’s determined to give him the time he needs. Meanwhile, the world is the mission. 

Crystal Yu / Lady Beifong

Lady Beifong and her husband only care about the business of making money and making sure that their daughter lives up to the Beifong name.

Lady Beifong seems to be the driving force behind the pair's attitude toward Toph. She’ll do anything to make sure that Toph complies despite what Toph wants.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee/Uncle Iroh

Iroh has many regrets. He has yet to completely forgive himself for the role he played when he was the Dragon of the West. He has blood on his hands.

He tries to prevent his nephew from walking the same path. He doesn't want to lose Zuko to the scourge of Fire Nation imperialism the same way he lost his son. Iroh continues to give Zuko chances to change. Will they run out before Zuko sees the truth?

Dallas Liu/ Prince Zuko

Prince Zuko is at war with himself. He was a sensitive child. He was a child who cared for the weak. But his father frowns on such weakness.

Over time, Zuko hardens his heart. But it’s at odds with who he truly is. Will he be the man the fire lord wants him to be? Or will he be the man he desires to be?

Elizabeth Yu /Princes Azula

Princess Azula is a demon. Though kindness comes easily to Zuko, wickedness and evil are the fruits she bares.

She knows she has to be this way to impress her father. But ironically, Ozai still favors Zuko, as the eldest boy. This fact makes her hate her brother all the more.

Chin Han/Long Feng

Long Feng is what this viewer would call a sellout. He’s willing to do just that to his people, so he can keep his power. The fool doesn’t realize that he risks loosing it all when he courts a fiery snake.

Daniel Dae Kim/Fire Lord Ozai

Ozai only respects strength. But this viewer thinks, he doesn't understand the true meaning of the word. He seeks dominance through fear and violence. He destroys his family for it.

Ozai will do whatever it takes to ensure he and his progeny will continue to helm the Fire Nation as it consumes the rest of the world.

Final Thoughts

Netflix does it again. They put forth another exciting installment of Avatar: The Last Airbender. With two excellent seasons under the creators' belts, next season will be sure to please.
